The Khalkha Jetsun Dampas are a prestigious tulku lineage that have been the heads of Buddhism in Mongolia since the 17th century with the first Jetsun Dampa, Zanabazar. These tulkus have ranked third in importance behind the Dalai Lamas and the Panchen Lamas.

The Ganden and Dakini Ear-Whispered lineages are two closely guarded yogic traditions of the Geluk school. Historically, their teachings have been quite secret and in the 20th century were at risk of disappearing. The 9th Jetsun Dampas made it his life’s mission to preserve these lineages for future generations.
The Khalkha Jetsun Dampas, are a historically revered reincarnate lama and serving as the heads of Buddhism in Mongolia, the Bogd Gegeen, since the 17th century until the brutal Communist takeover in the 1920s. The 9th Jetsun Dampa lived much of his life as a Tibetan refugee and not afforded the palaces and privileges of his predecessors. Despite being publicly recognized as the reincarnation of this prestigious lineage only in the 1990s, his influence was vast. He was later appointed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to lead the Jonang lineage-in-exile, and played a crucial role in reviving its traditions. The 9th Khalkha Jetsun Dampa also made it his life’s work to propagate the rare Ganden and Dakini Ear-Whispered lineages of the Geluk tradition which were at risk of disappearing due to their long secret nature.
